Bone Mineral Density Scans

Stay strong from the inside out

Our bones naturally become less dense as we age or with the development of certain medical conditions. When too much bone is lost, osteoporosis can develop. This condition weakens bones, making them more prone to breaks and injuries from even minor falls.

It’s recommended that regular scans begin at age 65 for women and 70 for men. Scans may start as early as age 50 for individuals with risk factors for fractures.

Our diagnostic imaging department offers advanced bone mineral density assessments, commonly known as DEXA scans.

Why Choose DEXA?

These low-dose X-ray exams are the most accurate method for measuring calcium and other minerals, as well as evaluating overall bone strength.

  • Early detection of osteoporosis and bone cancer
  • Insightful prevention and treatment options tailored to your health
  • Peace of mind with the most advanced diagnostic tools in Edmond

Common Questions About Bone Mineral Density Scans

How do I prepare?

Wear comfortable clothes, preferably without snaps, buttons or zippers at the waist, back or front (side is fine). If you do not have any of these on your outfit, you will not need to change clothes for the exam!

Avoid taking any form of calcium the day of your test. Remember to wait until after your test to take your vitamins or any medications that include calcium. Stay away from cream in your coffee, milk, cheese and yogurt for accurate results.

How Long Does It Take?

The scan itself takes only a minute for each area. The technologist will then analyze the scans when the exam is complete. This takes a few minutes for each area then it is sent off to the Radiologists for a final report. Your start to finish time should be around 15 minutes!
