Amputation Rehabilitation at INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation

The amputee program at INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation offers a comprehensive range of services to treat individuals with limb loss through inpatient and outpatient programs to community and home-based rehabilitative care.

A patient with a loss of a limb(s) may be admitted to INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation from a hospital, another rehabilitation program or from home by a patient, physician or family referral. Our multidisciplinary team focuses on recovery of the medical, physical, emotional, and social impacts and includes members from the following disciplines:

  • Physical medicine physicians
  • Rehabilitation nursing
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech/language pathology
  • Nurse case management
  • Social work
  • Psychological services
  • Recreational therapy
  • Support system

Additional Services include:

  • Prosthetic Services

  • Pet-assisted therapy
  • Music therapy
  • Wound care specialists
  • Home evaluation for accessibility modifications

In addition, therapy is offered seven days a week.

Patient and family education is a vital and important part of the rehabilitation process. Therefore, education sessions are held on a regular basis.

  • Sports and leisure
  • Sexuality coping and adjustment

Current Programs/Treatment options

  • Community outings are routinely scheduled and are focused on the individual needs of the patient. Activities the patient participated in prior to his or her limb loss are emphasized, and new activities are incorporated in the community setting.
  • Oklahoma City is home to some of the best prosthetic companies in the world and the treatment team works closely with a local prosthetist, of the patient's choice, to meet the needs of the person served.
  • The Courageous Amputees support group meets monthly on the 3rd Tuesday of every month and is open to patients and their family/caregivers.
  • Amputee Coalition of America is a fantastic resource for limb loss information and education that promotes prevention, support and advocacy. Additional information can be found at amputee-coalition.org.
  • Today prosthetic and adaptive equipment options are nearly limitless allowing individuals to participate in all facets of life from school to work to the Paralympics.

  • Over the last 5 years INTEGRIS Health Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation has seen an average of 75 patients a year with an amputation.
  • In 2014-2015 more than 80% of lower extremity amputees discharged to home or the community…more than 8% higher than the national average!

National Statistics

  • In the United States 500 new amputations occur every day with nearly 2 million people living with a limb loss.
  • The main causes of limb loss, are vascular disease at 54% (including diabetes and peripheral arterial disease), trauma at 45% and cancer less than 2%
  • As the result of vascular disease below-knee amputations are the most common amputations, representing 71%.
  • It is projected that the amputee population will nearly double by the year 2050 to 3.6 million.

Educational Information

  • Prevention is essential
    • Approximately 60% of amputations are preventable.
    • Patient education, proper nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness are key.
    • Routine regular visits with a doctor and/or podiatrist, may reduce diabetes‐related amputations by up to 80%.
    • Smoking has been associated with a re‐amputation risk 25 times that of nonsmokers.
    • Proper footwear is critical for individuals with diabetes.
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of amputation and affects:
    • 55% of individuals with limb loss due to diabetes will require amputation of the second leg within 3 years
    • African-Americans and Native Americans more than any other race
    • More than 25 million people in the U.S. and in 2010 nearly 2 million people over the age of 20 were newly diagnosed
  • Nearly half of the individuals who have an amputation due to vascular disease will die within 5 years. This is higher than the five year mortality rates for breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer.
  • In a survey by the Amputee Coalition of America nearly half reported needing help at home with activities such as personal care, meal preparation, and grocery shopping.
  • Depression and pain are the two primary secondary complications.
    • 70% experience residual limb pain
    • 80% experience phantom limb pain
