Thermal burns cause tissue death due to swelling and oxygen deprivation. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can minimize injury and surgeries needed to remove dead tissue. INTEGRIS Health Paul Silverstein Burn Center and INTEGRIS Health Hyperbaric Medicine and Wound Care use HBO therapy for burn patients.
In 1989, INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center was Oklahoma's first hospital to have an HBO chamber for one patient. In March 1995, they installed the state's largest chamber, treating up to 12 patients. Over 500 patients, aged five months to 92 years, have been treated in this chamber.
