Wound Care

Wound care is one of the most important aspects of burn treatment. The objective is to remove the burned tissue (eschar) so the skin can regenerate itself, or to prepare the wound for skin grafts. The basic method for providing wound care is debridement, which is often done in the hydrotherapy room. Topical creams are used in burn treatment and a variety of methods and combinations may be utilized by the physician. Each dressing change removes a thin layer of eschar and wound drainage.

If you or someone you're with has been burned, you should assess the situation on the following items:

  • Conduct a full physical exam
  • Estimate area of burn
  • Determine the degree and type of burn
  • Look for signs of respiratory burns, circumferential burns on chest and limb
  • Examine eyes
