Staying Hydrated After Weight Loss Surgery

Staying hydrated after weight loss surgery is crucial for recovery and overall well-being. It can be challenging to meet your fluid needs, especially in the early stages after surgery when your stomach can only handle small amounts. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated and recognize the signs of dehydration.

Hydration Tips:

  1. Start drinking hydrating fluids early in the day.
  2. Hydrating fluid goal is 64-96 ounces per day.
  3. Limit caffeine to 12 ounces per day max. Caffeine is a diuretic and if you are drinking coffee all day it doesn’t leave much time for hydrating fluids.
  4. Carry fluids with you at all times. Make it a habit to bring a drink with you when you get in the car.
  5. Remember to not drink during your meal or at least 30 min afterwards.
  6. Remember that decaf tea or coffee will count towards your hydrating fluid goal.
  7. Make sure your beverages do not contain calories.
  8. No carbonation. Not even carbonated water.
  9. Take small sips. This will get better over time.
  10. Do not use straws the first few months after surgery. Some patients can eventually use straws without being uncomfortable.

Symptoms of Dehydration:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Dark yellow or amber urine
  • Headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Decreased urine output
  • Dizziness or Lightheadedness
  • Rapid heartbeat

Unfortunately, there are times that the only way to get caught up on fluids is to get IV fluids at the ER. Call our office first and have a clinical team member assess if they think you need to go to the ER or if you can keep trying to hydrate at home.
