Few events are as stressful for a child as being admitted to the hospital. Many children enter the hospital feeling afraid and apprehensive because of the unfamiliar environment, pain or discomfort and separation from parents and family. If your child is having a scheduled admission to the hospital for surgery we recommend arranging for a tour for your family. Our experience has shown that a child adjusts better to the hospital if they have toured the unit and met the staff prior to admission. Call 405-949-4100 to arrange a tour.

What are the visiting hours?

We have open visiting hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Family and visitors may be asked to step out of the room for procedures or for patient rest.

Will I be able to stay with my child?

All rooms have a built in daybed for one parent to spend the night. We recommend that one parent go home at night to get rest to be able to relieve the other parent the next day.

What if I have to leave?

Although we don’t require a family member to stay, it is best for the child to have someone that they are familiar with to be with them during this stressful time. We recognize that there may be times you have to leave and we can access our Cuddler Program to have a trained volunteer stay with your child for brief periods that you can be there.

What will my child eat?

Your child’s diet will be decided by your physician. Infant formula is provided free of charge. For children allowed to have a diet you will be shown how to order food that will be pleasing to your child.

As a parent, you know your child better than anyone. You are an important part of your child’s health care team. You can play an active role by helping provide the staff with accurate and complete information about your child’s health, reporting any changes in his or her condition to the doctor or nurse and learning aspects that may have to be continued at home. Our staff recognize that having a hospitalized child is stressful for families. We will educate you on your child’s illness and keep your informed of your child’s status. We encourage families to seek information and to have open dialogue with your child’s doctor. Our staff is here to advocate for you and your child.

We have an open visiting policy in pediatrics. Family and friends may visit any time from 8 am to 8 pm. There may be times when visitors may be asked to leave the room for procedures or for the well being of the patient.

A complimentary meal tray is offered to one parent staying with a child under the age of two.

We also offer a gift shop on the first floor of the hospital as well as a pharmacy and Pastoral Care.

When your child is well enough to be discharged home, your child’s nurse will give you written instructions for you to follow at home. If home equipment is needed, Social Services and Case Management will arrange for the equipment to be brought to the hospital and for your education on the device prior to leaving the hospital.

Pediatrics is staffed with full time pharmacists specializing in pediatric pain management. All pediatric nurses are trained to evaluate and treat pain in infants, toddlers and older children using evaluation tools specifically design for pediatrics.
