Sleep disorder services

Around 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic sleep disorders, with 80% undiagnosed. Symptoms include daytime sleepiness and fatigue, leading to more accidents. Disorders like sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome are common.

In Oklahoma, about 380,000 people may have undiagnosed conditions. With over 80 types of disorders and overlapping symptoms, overnight sleep studies are crucial for diagnosis, reviewed by Board Certified Sleep Specialists.

Common sleep disorders

  • Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA): Involves blocked airflow due to tissue in the upper airway, causing snoring, daytime fatigue, and insomnia and heightening risks for heart issues and depression.
  • Restless leg syndrome (RLS): Results in an urge to move legs, disrupting sleep and is linked to periodic limb movement disorder.
  • Narcolepsy: Leads to excessive daytime sleepiness, impairing daily activities.
  • Insomnia: Encompasses sleep difficulties with next-day fatigue, sometimes due to disorders like OSA and RLS.
  • Snoring: Occurs when airflow is obstructed, causing throat vibrations during sleep.

Sleep study

Sleep studies are essential for diagnosing sleep disorders. At INTEGRIS Health Enid Hospital's Sleep Institute, experts monitor brain activity, heart rate, oxygen levels and breathing patterns.

Sleep involves varying stages, from light to deep, each with specific characteristics. A polysomnogram, which records multiple aspects of sleep, includes:

  • Electroencephalography (EEG): Measures brain wave activity
  • Electrooculogram (EOG): Measures eye movement
  • Electromyography (EMG): Measures muscle movement
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): Captures electrical activity of the heart

Sleep studies generally take place in a sleep lab during a person's normal sleeping hours. The goal is to record brain and body activity that occurs during sleep so sleep disorders can be diagnosed and treated. You may undertake a sleep study at INTEGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center and INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City.
