The 2021 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Winner, Coby Bryant of the University of Cincinnati, is considered the top defensive back in college football. He recently made a special visit to Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation at INTEGRIS Southwest Medical Center to visit with staff and patients there. It was a much needed boost to those recovering from injury or illness.
“We were thrilled to have Coby come spend some time with our caregivers and patients,” says Keith Wilton, the director of Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation. “We know the Jim Thorpe Award is largely based on character and that is certainly something Coby has a lot of. He is full of personality as well. It was a nice treat for everyone involved.”
The senior cornerback is named after late NBA legend Kobe Bryant and has been known to channel Kobe's ‘Mamba Mentality’ on the field. "My parents loved Kobe Bryant, and my brother does too," Coby said. "So I was named for Kobe Bryant — it's just spelled differently."
Bryant didn’t come to the hospital alone. He was accompanied by five past Jim Thorpe Award Winners: Adoree’ Jackson (2016), Desmond King (2015), Darqueze Dennard (2013), Morris Claiborne (2011) and Benny Blades (1987).
They were all in town for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Banquet held annually in Oklahoma City by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
