He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and completed his general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina Hospitals. He finished his colon and rectal surgery fellowship at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor/University of Michigan.
Mahoney offers minimally invasive techniques for surgery on the colon and rectum, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery to minimize postoperative in-hospital and recovery time. He strives to get to know his patients on a personal level, enabling him to provide a more individualized plan to suit their needs. Mahoney does not believe in a one-size-fits-all treatment plan for any given problem.
