INTEGRIS Health Caregiver Becomes Only Nationally Certified Ethicist in Oklahoma

Lindsay SemlerLindsay Semler recently attained the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified (HEC-C) credential. This professional certification is the first of its kind and was developed by the ASBH to establish nationally recognized standards to promote professionalism and excellence within the specialty of clinical ethics.

Semler, DNP, RN, CCRN, HEC-C, NPD-BC, WTA-C, who is currently the system manager of clinical ethics at INTEGRIS Health, is the only certified ethicist in Oklahoma.

She is responsible for the quality, effectiveness and performance of the system-wide ethics program and promotes ethical practices throughout INTEGRIS Health. Her specialized knowledge enables her to prevent, identify and resolve ethical concerns that may arise when working with patients, families and medical providers. The combination of her certification and doctorate enables her to drive organizational improvements that are high quality, evidence-based and adhere to the highest standards of contemporary bioethics.

Certification as a Healthcare Ethics Consultant has been a goal of Semler’s since she started at INTEGRIS Health in 2020. “Earning the HEC-C credential reinforces the ethicist’s role at the organizational level and in the medical decision-making process, which is paramount to maintaining ethical practices in patient care,” says Semler.

Avilla Williams, vice president of clinical services at INTEGRIS Health, agrees. “The benefits from this program will be a great service to our patients and community and is an example of INTEGRIS Health’s commitment to the highest level of care,” she says. “We congratulate and thank Lindsay for obtaining this professional certification.”

ASBH is a nonprofit organization of health care professionals, teachers, consultants and others with an interest in clinical and academic bioethics and the health-related humanities.
