Janice Brown and her daughter, Holly Way, are very close. Like many mother/daughter duos they share many of the same features and characteristics, but unlike many others – they also share the same doctor and have for years.
Janice gave birth to Holly in May of 1986. “I went to the hospital because I thought I was in labor,” she remembers. “Dr. Susan Chambers was my OB/GYN and she was actually on vacation but she came in anyway to deliver my baby! She actually slept on a cot waiting for me to deliver which made me feel special and important from the very beginning.”
Susan Chambers, M.D., practices obstetrics and gynecology and was one of the founders of Lakeside Women’s Hospital. “I have spent many a night sleeping on cots, couches or in empty patient room beds waiting for babies to appear. It’s just part of the job of being an obstetrician for almost 40 years!”
Like any mother-to-be, Janice was a little apprehensive about delivering but she said knowing Dr. Chambers was nearby put her at ease and reassured her that everything was going to be all right. “Even when Holly came out with her cord wrapped around her neck, I knew she was in great hands and would be ok. My husband watched in awe as Dr. Chambers masterfully freed our baby's neck and we heard her cry.”
Fast forward twenty years and Janice once again found herself in the delivery room, this time to witness the birth of her first granddaughter – Aubriana (Aubri). “Yes, Dr. Chambers is my OB/GYN as well,” says Holly. “It is cool to think about how she delivered me and then also delivered my first baby girl – and my second!”
That’s right, Janice, Holly, Aubri and Dr. Chambers were all together again four years later when baby Mckenzie was born. “It’s surreal to know my daughter and both of my granddaughters were delivered by the very same doctor,” exclaims Janice. Her daughter, Holly, echoes that sentiment, “Not many people get to share that experience. And it’s one of the most amazing experiences of a woman’s lifetime.”
“One of the greatest joys of being an OB/GYN is caring for patients year after year,” says Chambers. “Experiencing all of their joys and pains and a variety of life events, including delivering generations of wonderful people. I wouldn't trade it for the world!”
And the connection doesn’t end there. Holly’s first daughter, Aubri, is coming of age and is now a patient of Dr. Chambers herself. While McKenzie isn’t far behind in needing gynecological care, the family makes it very clear that she will see Dr. Chambers as well. “No question about it. Dr. Chambers will care for three generations of our family – maybe more,” declares Janice. “I wouldn’t send them anywhere else! I recommend Dr. Chambers and Lakeside to anyone who will listen.”
