In honor of National Therapy Animal Day, INTEGRIS Health is proud to shine a light on one of our beloved volunteers: Kasper the therapy dog and his handler, Cheryl.
Every other Wednesday, patients and staff at the INTEGRIS Health Cancer Institute look forward to seeing Kasper, a friendly and spirited Weimaraner. Known affectionately as the “de-stressor dog,” Kasper brings comfort, joy and a sense of calm to those who need it most. Whether he’s visiting patients or greeting team members in the hallways, Kasper’s presence creates meaningful moments of connection and healing.
“Sometimes we see patients come out of their shells when Kasper walks into the room,” says Cheryl. “It’s a different kind of therapy. It may not heal physically, but it absolutely heals emotionally. If we can make one person smile, we’ve met our goal for the day.” Watch Kasper’s video by clicking photo below.
Kasper’s name, a nod to the “friendly ghost,” is fitting. Weimaraners are often called the “gray ghost,” and Kasper’s gentle, patient nature makes him a perfect companion during difficult times. From patients missing their pets to staff members needing a quick mental break, Kasper’s visits offer comfort in ways that words sometimes can’t.
He’s also become a bit of a celebrity among the caregivers, many keep treats stashed in their desks just for him, and Kasper knows exactly where to go. It’s just one more way he brings a little bit of happiness to everyone he meets.
Cheryl believes any dog has the potential to make a difference with the right training and heart. “If you have the desire to do it, do it,” she says. “Dog therapy truly matters, especially for people who are missing home, missing family or just missing their pets. It makes a difference.”
Today, and every day, we celebrate therapy animals like Kasper who remind us that healing comes in many forms! You can keep up with Kasper’s adventures by following him on Instagram at @kasper_therapy_dog.
