High school students from across northeast Oklahoma are getting a closer look at careers in health care, thanks to an immersive internship program offered through INTEGRIS Health Grove Hospital and INTEGRIS Health Miami Hospital. Now in its seventh term, the 16-week program continues to provide valuable hands-on experiences for local youth, and this year, it’s bigger than ever.
Previously open only to students from Miami and Grove High Schools, the internship program has now expanded to include students from Commerce, Afton, Fairland, Jay and Wyandotte high schools.
Throughout the semester, interns will rotate through a wide range of hospital departments including the emergency department, women’s health, lab, pharmacy, surgery, intensive care unit (ICU), physical therapy, respiratory care and the medical-surgical patient floor.
“This program allows students to experience the full scope of what a career in health care might look like,” said Elsie Grover, administrative project manager at INTEGRIS Health Miami and Grove hospitals. “Some students come in thinking they know what they want to do, only to discover an area they’re even more passionate about. Others start with just a general interest in health care, and by the end of the program, they’ve found a calling.”
Students have the unique opportunity to shadow medical professionals, observe procedures and experience moments rarely seen outside formal training programs.
“This is our largest internship class yet,” says Grover. “Together, we are creating opportunities for students to learn, grow and gain invaluable experiences, with the hope that they will return as medical professionals and make a positive impact in our community.”
High school juniors and seniors interested in applying for the spring 2026 session are encouraged to speak with their school counselor. Applications will open in September.
