INTEGRIS Health Weighs in on Obesity in Oklahoma

March 4 is World Obesity Day

Obesity is an epidemic in the United States. Oklahoma, as well as many states across the nation, has seen a steady increase in rates of obesity over the past two decades. The state we call home is consistently one of the most obese states in the country. Future projections place Oklahoma on the path to becoming the most obese state in the United States by 2030, if we don’t alter our (weighs) ways.

“While genetics may contribute to an increased risk of weight gain, contributing factors like poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and excessive alcohol use are within our control,” says Hamilton Le, M.D., a bariatric surgeon and the medical director of the INTEGRIS Health Weight Loss Center. “Diet and lifestyle changes can be the solution for many, but others may benefit from medications or surgical weight loss procedures.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 40% of Oklahomans have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, which is considered obese. Obesity puts people at a higher risk for serious diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease. Use our Body Mass Index Calculator to see where you fall in the chart below.

This year’s World Obesity Day theme, Changing Systems, Healthier Lives, shines a light on the systemic issues contributing to obesity.

For too long, the world has placed the blame on individuals. But the reality is much more complex. Failing systems—health, food, regulatory, governmental and even urban design—all contribute to rising obesity rates worldwide.

“As a society we need to do better,” declares Le. “We need to end the stigma that surrounds those living with obesity and concentrate instead on creating obesity prevention and reduction strategies on the local, national and global level. Because the only way to truly address the obesity crisis is to advocate for practical solutions and meaningful change.”
