Together through every step

Breast Cancer Surgery

Breast cancer surgery is often an important part of treatment and may include a lumpectomy (breast-conserving surgery) or a mastectomy (removal of the breast). The right approach depends on the type and stage of cancer, as well as your personal preferences and treatment goals.

Lumpectomy

A lumpectomy removes the tumor and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue while preserving as much of the breast as possible. After surgery, the tissue is examined to ensure all cancer has been removed.

Depending on the amount of tissue removed, the breast may look different in size or shape. Some patients may have options to improve symmetry during the same procedure.

Mastectomy

A mastectomy removes the entire breast and may be recommended when cancer is widespread, a lumpectomy cannot achieve clear margins, or based on personal preference and risk factors. Some women may also consider a double mastectomy if they are at increased risk of breast cancer.

Breast reconstruction may be performed at the same time as a mastectomy or during a later procedure.

Choosing the right surgery

Every breast cancer diagnosis is unique. Your care team will help you understand your options and make recommendations based on your individual needs.

Factors to consider include:

  • Preserving your natural breast
  • Breast appearance and symmetry
  • Risk of cancer recurrence
  • Interest in breast reconstruction
  • Need for additional treatments, such as radiation therapy

Breast Cancer in Men: Signs, Symptoms and Treatment Options

Male breast cancer is a rare condition, accounting for less than one percent of all breast cancer cases, but it's still important to be aware of its signs, symptoms, causes and treatment options should you or a loved one be impacted. As part of breast cancer awareness in October, we talk to Samer Hassan, M.D., a board-certified physician in internal medicine, oncology and hematology, with INTEGRIS Health Cancer Institute at Southwest Medical Center.

What Is a Diagnostic Mammogram?

When it comes to breast cancer screenings, the word “mammogram” is what most people associate with the testing that plays a key role in diagnosing cancer. But some people may not know there are two types of mammograms – screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms.

Understanding Breast Cancer Risk

Despite being one of the most common types of cancers, the scientific explanation for why breast cancer occurs more often than other types of cancers is unknown in the medical community. What researchers do know is which factors heighten – or lower – the risk of developing breast cancer. As breast cancer prevalence grows (women have a 13 percent lifetime risk, meaning 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed), having a basic understanding of what puts you at risk can help you prepare for the future.
