Stroke Treatment Options

Clot-Busting Drugs

When a suspected stroke patient presents, our team is contacted immediately. Clot-busting thrombolytics, i.e. tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is given to select patients according to evidence-based guidelines. Stroke patients are closely monitored and begin treatment as soon as possible with experts in speech, occupational and physical therapies. Ultimately patients are transitioned to rehabilitation if needed. Following discharge from the hospital, stroke patients will have the opportunity to follow-up with the neurologist to further provide continuity of care.

Acute Intervention

In addition to clot-busting drugs, the James R. Daniel Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center is one of few sites in Oklahoma that offers intra-arterial thrombolysis/thrombectomy, a treatment that can be given to select stroke patients hours after the onset of symptoms. This procedure involves a catheter being inserted into a major blood vessel in the leg and guided to inject tPA directly into the clots in the brain or to use mechanical devices to remove or break up the clot within the brain.

Surgical Treatment

Surgical options available in select cases of stroke include:

  • Intra-Arterial Thrombolysis/Thrombectomy
  • Aneurysmal Clipping
  • Aneurysmal Coiling
  • Ventriculostomy
  • Carotid Endarterectomy
  • Carotid Artery Stenting
