Adaptive Care Environments for Spinal Cord Injuries

 

Course Description:

This course presented by Dr. Kristi Self introduces learners to strategies and resources for managing patients with spinal cord injury post-rehabilitation.  Participants will gain knowledge about the different levels of care that these patients may need as their life progresses as well as community supports that are available to these patients.  Learners will be introduced to the concept of a medical home and how this approach to health care management may prove beneficial for patients with spinal cord injury.

Course Outcomes:

  1. Discuss changing epidemiological trends of the SCI population.
  2. Discuss options for care of the post-rehabilitation SCI patient.
  3. Identify needed home resources.
  4. Identify components of a medical home program.
  5. Identify specific SCI characteristics of assisted living and long-term care facilities.
  6. Identify and provide appropriate education for primary care providers.

Speaker Bio:

Kristi Self, M.D., is the Medical Director for the Spinal Cord Injury Program at Jim Thorpe Rehabilitation Hospital.  She graduated from OU College of Medicine.  She completed her internship and residency at Baylor Hospital College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.  She is a member of various professional organizations including:  American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Medical Association, Oklahoma State Medical Association, Oklahoma County Medical Association, and the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals.  Along with spinal cord injury, her professional interests include musculoskeletal injuries, amputation, and stroke.
