Course Description:

Knowing when and how to renew licensure and maintain clinical competence can be confusing.  This course is designed to assist rehabilitation professionals in navigating the maze of continuing education requirements, course offerings, and personal/professional development needs.  Course attendees will learn about specific requirements to maintain national certification as well as their state licensure.  Emphasis will be placed on evaluating the wide range of education opportunities that exist and how to appropriately claim credit for the work.  In addition to this, participants will gain greater insight into their personal learning style and use this along with their clinical competence level to choose more impactful learning opportunities. 

Course Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the continuing education credits needed to maintain national certification and state licensure.
  2. Describe a minimum of 5 different professional activities that may qualify for continuing education credit.
  3. Self-assess and identify professional educational development needs based on analysis of their patients and patient outcomes. 

Speaker Bio:

 Derick D Deweber, PhD, CCC-SLP is the Rehab Development Consultant for INTEGRIS Jim Thorpe. He has 15 years of clinical experience as a speech-language pathologist in various settings including: acute care, inpatient rehab, outpatient, and home health. Dr. Deweber completed his PhD from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where his primary research focus has been on bilingualism and the neuro-psycho-linguistic effects of adult second language acquisition. He has also participated in research projects on topics including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's diseases and other motor speech disorders.
