Hello and welcome to Transplant ECMO ICU!
We are located on the 6th floor west wing of INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center (IBMC). This unit is fast paced and challenging but rewarding.
We typically take care of acute critical adult clients who may be receiving treatment for pre/post-transplant (lung, kidney, pancreas, and/or liver). We also provide care for patients in acute respiratory distress syndrome and cardiogenic shock.
This unit is unique in many ways: nurses of 6 west get to provide care for transplant recipients. Whether that be pre transplantation while the client is in organ failure, immediately post transplantation during recovery, or post-transplant. The nurses of 6west learn how to care for these patients throughout their entire journey. 6 west is equipped and fortunate to provide ECMO for patients in acute respiratory failure and/or cardiogenic shock. This unit is one of a the few well established adult ECMO programs in surrounding states. We also have the availability to collaborate with OB nurses during pregnancy ECMO cases. There are fetal heart tone monitors in four of our ICU rooms that transmit information to our OB unit where an OB RN can monitor baby while we monitor and provide ICU/ECMO care for mom. Impella, balloon pump, and LVAD treatment is also seen in cardiogenic patients on this unit.
Nurses can expect to work hard, use strong critical thinking, and become experts in therapies/ specialized care for these patients. New nurses can expect to complete a nurse residency program with an assigned preceptor; generally completing some orientation on day shift before transitioning to nights.
