We care for some of the most critically ill cardiac patients from all across the region here in 801.
We are the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit, otherwise known as the Intrathoracic Care Unit. We are located on the north side of the 8th floor in the main hospital building.
We care for some of the most critically ill cardiac patients from all across the region here in 801. We work with stellar cardiothoracic and vascular surgeons and an awesome team of intensivists. In an average week, we recover about seven open heart surgery patients, such as those post coronary bypass and/or valve repair or replacement.
In addition to these cardiovascular surgery patients, we serve a large number of acute and chronic heart failure patients who require advanced therapies such as implanted left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), right ventricular assist devices (RVAD), total artificial hearts (TAH), bi-ventricular support, heart transplantation, and extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO). Intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella support, and continuous renal replacement therapy are some of the additional assistive devices you could expect to see here in 801. As you can imagine, these high-acuity patients demand an incredible team of caregivers. 801 knows teamwork! It’s challenging work here, but saving lives with the most extraordinary care is very rewarding.
Orientation to our unit is generally anywhere from 3-6 months for new staff. The experience gained from working with our team is invaluable. If you’re looking for a fast-paced, challenging environment, 801 is where it’s at!
