Welcome to the heart catheterization laboratory, commonly known as the cath lab. Our unit consists of four procedural rooms, a hybrid operating room, an eight-bay holding area where patients are held pre and post-procedure, an EP room and another eight recovery beds.
Our unit is fast-paced and cares for a wide variety of high-acuity patients with the most complex cardiac issues in the state.
On average, the lab performs around 30 daily procedures with our physicians, cardiovascular radiology technicians, nurses, and scrub technicians who specialize in invasive diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures.
Our patient population is adults with coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, advanced heart failure, organ transplant candidates, and pulmonary hypertension. These diagnoses are often debilitating, making our patients incredibly fragile and unstable.
Our unit is unique as we often are placed in stressful situations. We perform many high-risk percutaneous coronary interventions that require external assistance devices such as impellas and balloon pumps. These devices allow for additional cardiac support during these complex procedures. We also manage all STEMI cases and are under time constraints to care for these patients promptly to meet the core measure of door-to-balloon time in 90 minutes.
During the 12-week orientation process, new staff will be exposed to our flow process of preparing the patient for the procedure, managing the patient during the procedure, and care of the patient afterward. We provide orientees with a dedicated preceptor who takes the lead on their learning and identifies specific educational needs. Multiple classes pertaining to the heart hospital and cardiac care will be attended during this time to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the cath lab is complete.
