Careers

Since establishing the Radiology Residency Program in 1969, INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center has consistently produced residents that have gone on to prestigious careers.

Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program

Welcome to the INTEGRIS Health Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. Since 1969, we’ve trained radiologists who go on to top careers.

Female nurse prepares senior male for treatment in hyperbaric chamber

With just 4 residents per year and no fellows, you get hands-on IR access and one-on-one readouts with staff. Most residents match into top fellowships and all graduate ready for private practice or academics.

Our ACGME-designated Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) track lets qualifying residents start in an advanced (2nd year) position in an independent IR program.

Residency curriculum

  • Extensive exposure and opportunity in Interventional Radiology with one on one resident/faculty experience
  • Extensive Cross-Sectional Imaging experience in the inpatient and outpatient settings with deep exposure to Oncologic Imaging, and active participation in Multi-specialty conferences
  • 1:1 staff to resident ratio allows for close interaction and teaching
  • Our residents attend the American Institute of Radiologic Pathology and a general review conference in their 3rd year. They also receive a 3 day intensive Physics review before Core
  • Off-site Pediatric Radiology Rotations broaden our resident’s horizons and expose them to different practice styles.

  • Flouroscopy
  • Stroke Trauma
  • Theranostic lab
  • All cross-sectional imaging
    • CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Image guided biopsy
  • Interventional Radiology
    • General Body and Interventional Neuroradiology
  • Oncologic Imaging including PET/CT with rotations at INTEGIRS Cancer Institute of Oklahoma (ICIO)
  • Pediatric Radiology with rotations at UT Southwestern Children’s Hospital and INTEGRIS Health Heart Hospital

Residents are treated well, with an emphasis on learning, not grinding out the maximum number of studies.

  1. Nine scheduled conferences per week, including case conferences and didactic lectures. Lecture time is protected for residents (12-1pm and 4-5pm)
  2. Paid conferences for all residents
  3. AIRP course is paid
  4. Participation in in-house tumor board conferences
  5. Monthly journal club conference

There is extensive MRI experience for residents, in which the resident gets one-on-one teaching with fellowship-trained staff in Breast, MSK, Neuro and Body imaging. Five to six months are allotted per resident, with the fist month occurring before call begins.

Well-established transplant service at INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center provides experience with liver and kidney transplant imaging. Transplant conferences occur once a month.

Our PACS system has been in place since 2003. It is completely integrated with voice recognition software.

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency at INTEGRIS Health Baptist Medical Center is an ACGME accredited program with a total of 17 positions. We recruit four or five residents for each class year.

We are an Advanced Standing Program, and qualified candidates must apply for a preliminary clinical year concurrently and separately in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or equivalent organization.

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Training Program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS).

Candidates should contact their local Graduate Medical Education office for instructions on registering with ERAS. Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).

"I think the biggest strength of the program is early experience reading on our own WITHOUT an in-house attending. Secondarily, the availability of moonlighting for that same reason. Every job interview I had, they asked me about if I had experience reading on my own because people coming out of high profile academic institutions are often slow when starting private practice because they haven't read on their own. Everyone was glad to hear I had extensive experience functioning on my own." - Jacob Azurdia, M.D., Class of 2020

Call

We have 17 residents, with one on call per night, which averages to around q17d for the residency. Most call is taken during 2nd and 3rd years of residency making the average closer to q9d for the time you actually are taking call.

The ER rotation functions as night float so that on call you stay until 8pm on the weekdays/weekends.

Moonlighting

The consensus among staff and residents is the same regarding moonlighting in moderation: it is a logical step in education, giving more senior residents additional radiology training experience and confidence.

"Going into my IR fellowship, I was very well prepared. My fellowship director even told me that I had the best technical skill of any fellow he had ever had! Of course, I owe all that to the training I received at INTEGRIS Health." - Brett Hyatt, D.O., Class of 2019
